Studies with the inhalation of small quantities of essential oils such as True Lavender have demonstrated that both REM (rapid eye movement or dream sleep) and non-REM sleep are positively improved, leading to a refreshing sleep in the case of mild insomnia. Common sleep medications, such as benzodiazepine drugs, are powerful, but they disturb REM sleep, often leading to grogginess and hangover the following day, as well as leading to dependence if over-used.
